The folk-rock singer-songwriter sailed onto the scene with his self-titled album in 2005, and has never looked back. His star continued to rise with his second record, The storywhich reached the Billboard 200 in 2007. Carlile, 40, reached a career high with her sixth album, By the way, I forgive you in 2018. She scored six nominations for the record at the 61st annual Grammy Awards — the most for a female artist that year — winning three Grammys that night.
Carlile went on to dominate music’s biggest night in the years that followed, winning Best Country Song and Best Country Album in 2020, and Best Country Song with her all-female quartet The Highwomen in 2021.
Always honest with fans, Carlile opened up about his childhood in poverty, sexuality, faith and the path to success in his memoir broken horseswho exceeded The New York Times bestseller list when it was released last spring.
Speaking to PEOPLE at the time, Carlile explained what it was like to be a parent in the LGBTQ+ community. The star shares daughters Evangeline, 6, and Elijah, 3, with wife Catherine Shepherd.
“I hope people will see through my story that there is no right or wrong way to evolve into parenting in straight or same-sex relationships,” Carlile said. “There are different and complicated dynamics, and there are many ways to feel. The more we talk about it and normalize it, the easier it is to understand that your parenting journey is personalized. It’s really yours.”
