Mary J. Blige is set to receive the Icon Award at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, celebrating those who have achieved excellence on the Billboard Charts and made a moment to remember mark the music as a whole.
“My career has been such an amazing and unexpected journey that has included many turns in avenues I could never have imagined like performing, producing, starting businesses and now even my own music festival,” Blige said in A press release. “Through it all, I always somehow came back to my first love, music. To be recognized in this way right now, with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards, is an incredible honor and one that really touches me.
Since the honor’s inception in 2011, only 10 artists have received the award: Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Cher, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks and P!NK.

In the competitive categories, Doja Cat and The Weeknd lead the nominees with 14 and 17 nominations, respectively. The most decorated BBMA artist of all time, Drake, who holds the record with 29 wins, is up for 11 categories at this year’s event.
For over 30 years, the BBMAs have celebrated musical achievement. Finalists are determined by their performance on the Billboard Charts. This year’s prices are based on the chart period from April 10, 2021 to March 26, 2022.
The BBMAs will broadcast live coast-to-coast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Additionally, the ceremony will be broadcast live on Peacock. The awards are produced by MRC Live & Alternative with Robert Deaton serving as executive producer.
