Olivia Rodrigo was the big winner of the Billboard Music Awards 2022 | Culture & Leisure

Olivia Rodrigo topped the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, winning seven awards.

The annual ceremony returned to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday evening (15.05.22), and this year half of the winners were revealed on TikTok and the other half during a live stream on Peacock and NBC in the USA.

Teenage pop superstar Olivia, 19, and rap legend Kanye, 44, dominated the evening.

Olivia won Top New Artist, Top 100 Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Billboard Global 200 Artist, and Top RB Female Artist, while “SOUR” was crowned Top Billboard 200 Album. .

As for Kanye, the “Jesus Walks” rapper topped the gospel and Christian categories, with “Donda” winning both Top Christian and Top Gospel Album. It was also named Top Christian and Gospel Artist, while “Hurricane” by “Donda” was named Top Christian and Gospel Song, giving it a total of six awards.

Doja Cat walked away with three awards for Top RB Artist, Top Viral Song for “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA, and Top Female RB Artist.

The Weeknd was the most nominated before the ceremony, with 17 nods, but the ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker only picked up one award for top male RB artist.

The star-studded evening was hosted by Diddy and featured performances from Megan Thee Stallion, Silk Sonic, Burna Boy, Florence + The Machine, Ed Sheeran and Machine Gun Kelly.

Before the start of the ceremony, organizers caused controversy by allowing country star Morgan Wallen to make an appearance despite being banned last year for using a racial slur.

The 29-year-old singer-songwriter performed just after civil rights activist Tamika Mallory gave a speech on social justice and anti-racism, which raised some eyebrows.

Travis Scott also performed, six months after the Astroworld tragedy saw 10 people die in a crowd at the rapper’s festival.

Prior to the event, host Diddy addressed Morgan and Travis’ booking.

He said: “So that Morgan and Travis can come back and hit the stage again with the mindset of having a second chance at life.

“Everyone in the room has a second chance at life, you know, because we’re back outside without a mask. We need love and I’m excited to celebrate that.
