Although live music has returned to Saskatchewan this year, the annual event celebrating industry successes remains online for the time being.

The Saskatchewan Music Awards will be streamed online Thursday.

SaskMusic launched the awards in 2018 to bring together music industry professionals and celebrate local musical talent across the province.

The gala will air for the second consecutive time this year in a prepackaged format; the 2020 ceremony was postponed from November to January before becoming an online event.

Performers include Saskatoon’s The Garrys, vbnd and Katie Tupper, as well as Regina’s Flash Back and Cut Knife’s Jake Vaadeland.

In a statement, SaskMusic said all SMAs will be revealed on Thursday except for Album of the Year, which was announced in December after the Hunter Brothers’ album Been a Minute topped the charts. a public poll.

Saskatoon’s nominated artists include:

Alternative : Carson Shmyr; Slow molasses; The Garrys; The Stables.

Country : Amanda Hagel; Munro and Patrick.

Electronic : Nigeria B; Theo Noble.

Experimental/Contemporary : Factor Eight; Jesse Brown; The Faps.

hip-hop : Alex Bent + the Void; Ev Thompson; RaytheNihilist; So so.

Metal/Strong : Forward & Fast; Swayze.

Rock/Pop :The Garrys; velvet; W3APONS.

In addition to being nominated for Best Venue, Saskatoon’s Broadway Theater is also up for the Industry Achievement Award alongside Saskatoon-based Gray Records.

The nominees for the brand new Indigenous Artist Award are all from Saskatoon: Jarrid Lee, The North Sound, The Northwest Kid, vbnd and Yvonne St. Germaine. The North Sound is also nominated for Roots/Folk.

R&B artist is another new category for 2021. Saskatoon artists Ariel, Emanali, Namoo Nara and vbnd are among the nominees.

The fourth annual Very Prairie Music Summit, which will be held January 21-23, will also be online. The summit, an educational event for Saskatchewan musicians and the industry at large, provides opportunities for career growth and networking.
