Stevie Nicks once advised Katy Perry on music industry rivalry
Stevie Nicks is a phenomenal singer well known for her amazing songs and contributions to classics.
During her storied career, the singer has had a significant effect on the music world. More so, Nicks has chosen not to stay away from the way women are viewed in rock and has done her part to advance the agenda of female singers in the music industry.
One co-star who has felt the music legend’s impact is Katy Perry. Nicks has previously expressed his love for the “Roar” singer and her style of music. And on one occasion, his love for Perry gave him friendly advice on what to do when in a feud with others in the music business.
“You don’t need rivals”
Nicks, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, was interviewed for The New Yorker and opened up about the highlights of her career. While the conversation was ongoing, Nicks dropped a few tidbits about a conversation she had with Perry in the past.
The Fleetwood Mac member told Tavi Gevinson, a reporter, that she had a chance meeting with Perry at the Corinthia Hotel in London in 2012. The pair went on to discuss the rivalry in the music business as well as of how engaging in such issues was not ideal.
“She said, ‘So Stevie, who are your rivals?’ And I said, ‘I have no rivals.’ And her big blue eyes just got bluer and bluer,” the singer said. “And I said, ‘No Katy, I don’t, and neither do you. You are Katy Perry, you are who you are, you do what you do, and you are good at it. My name is Stevie Nicks, I do what I do and I’m good at it. We have no rivals. It’s just ridiculous.
Katy Perry comments on her alleged rivalry with Taylor Swift
At the time, Perry, 37, referenced Taylor Swift in their chat, citing her alleged feud with the award-winning pop star, which made headlines.
“She said, ‘Well, there’s like Taylor Swift’s army and there’s like Katy’s army and there’s like -‘ And I was like, ‘It’s just bulls – -t”,” Nicks added. “You just have to get away from that. Don’t keep that in your mind because then they win the game.”
Following the conversation with Nicks, Perry seemed to absorb the advice and implement his values. Although it took a while, she finally reached out to her co-worker and took the first step to ending the bad blood.
Perry reached out to Taylor Swift
In a 2019 interview with Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O, Perry how she and Swift chose to put their feud behind.
“It was sort of a process. I sent him a literal olive branch and a note apologizing for my part in all of this at the start of his “Reputation” tour. I just thought she was about to embark on something new and big and needed some support,” Perry admitted.
She added: “As I was finishing mine, I realized how much we had in common, and maybe there are only five other people in the world who can have the same kind of conversations and understand. where we come from and that we should celebrate our commonalities and our friendship and be able to be there for each other.
Nicks relationship with Christine McVie
In his interview with The New Yorker, Nicks also opened up about his relationship with Christine McVie. The singer went into detail about how they both choose to be independent in their choices and don’t rely on anyone to validate their talents.
“We were very protective of each other. We made a pact, at the very beginning, that we would never be treated with disrespect by any male musicians in the community,” Nicks said. “And we stuck to it. I think we swore that, if we ever felt like we were being treated like this, we would get up and leave – and we did. We would just say, “Well, this party is over for us.”
