A Hawaiian teacher puts a fun twist on learning…by making music videos!
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) — Carissa Kano always knew she wanted to be a teacher. She said she even dressed up as a teacher for Halloween when she was in kindergarten.
Her dreams have come true: she is now a primary school teacher in Maemae.
In March 2020, Kano needed a way to keep his students’ attention while they were forced into virtual learning.
Using costumes and singing, she put on a show for her students – under the impression that the lockdown was only going to last two weeks.
“I believe that in order to create a fun and safe learning atmosphere for our children, you kind of have to create that by being able to laugh at yourself and laugh with them too,” Kano said.
She said her students would wait in front of their computers every day in anticipation of which character Kano would be dressing.
In 2021, Kano used his talents to make a video titled “Just Choose Love” with over 80 teachers and staff at Maemae Primary School. The song was a variation of the popular K-Pop song, “Boy With Luv,” and it took four weeks to recreate.
“We made a music video about love and kindness as a kind of collective community response to give to our families since people weren’t allowed on campus,” Kano said.
His latest video, “That’s What We Like,” is a video explaining to his students the basics of having to do things in life that they might not like.
“They like to be part of something fun. They like to have this gender pride, it’s our class, it’s our teacher. We do it together,” said Kano, who also ran for Miss Hawaii in 2018.
In the latest episode of Hawaii News Now’s Island Beat podcast, Billy V chats with Kano about her love for teaching with engaging music videos and also how her stint in the Miss Hawaii pageant helped her in her career as a teacher. teacher.
