“Artists lack understanding of the music industry”

MUSICOLOGIST Kwanele “Kwazlegacy” Moyo says local musicians only have the potential to conform to international standards if they are able to understand the operations of the industry.
Moyo said some artists don’t know how the showbiz industry works.
“The main drawback that limits the growth of the music industry is the lack of knowledge of the artists. A lot of musicians make music without understanding how things should be done,” he said.
“Knowledge sharing among artists about how the music industry works is also important in developing music careers. It is surprising that there are few musicians who are even registered with the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association for their own benefit.
“They don’t even know that they can engage stakeholders such as Ministries of Justice, Interior, Finance and Economic Development, Industry and Trade, among others, for project proposals. .”
The Gwanda-based musicologist urged musicians to be professional if they want to develop their careers.
“When engaging relevant stakeholders on issues aimed at developing their careers, musicians must demonstrate a high level of professionalism and integrity in their understanding of the music industry. Artists should reach out and not be afraid to go to any office they want to visit in relation to issues that affect their careers,” he added.
