New Performances This Fall Announced by UAB Music Department – News

The Music Department of the College of Arts and Sciences presents recitals and concerts by students, faculty, and guest artists, and many performances are free.

Boris SlutskyA new season of concerts and recitals, including a world premiere by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Music, has been announced for this fall.

The UAB College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music presents recitals and concerts by students, faculty, and guest artists. Many performances are free.

The Department of Music will host the world premiere of Michael John Trotta’s “Requiem” at its Choral Masterworks Festival on Sunday, October 9. On Thursday, October 20, experience “Chamber Music @ AEIVA,” a carefully curated program by Laura Usiskin inspired by the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts exhibit of works by legendary Alabama artist Thornton Dial Sr. ., “I, Too, Am Alabama”. The UAB Piano Series will feature pianist Boris Slutsky on Sunday, October 30 in a program featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninoff.

Sept. 30-Oct. 1

Yakov Kasman with Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Masterworks presented by EBSCO, 7 p.m., Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at UAB. Emeritus Professor of Music Yakov Kasman, piano, will be the soloist of Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Also on the concert program, conducted by ASO Maestro Carlos Izcaray, will be “Pictures at an exhibition“7 O’clock Shout” by Valerie Coleman, an anthem inspired by the tireless efforts of frontline workers in the COVID-19 pandemic, and Ravel’s thrilling “La Valse.” Tickets cost between $24 and $80.

UAB Department of Music Piano Series featuring Boris Slutsky, 4 p.m., Alys Stephens Center at UAB, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall. With works by Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninoff. Constantly acclaimed for his exquisite tonal beauty and superb artistry, Slutsky has performed on nearly every continent as a soloist and recitalist, collaborating with eminent conductors and major orchestras. He won first prizes at the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition, the San Antonio International Keyboard Competition, and the William Kapell International Piano Competition, where he also received the Audience Award and the William Backhaus Prize.
