Silk Sonic Wins Big at the 2022 BET Awards E! News UK

Silk Sonic was the big winner at the 2022 BET Awards.

The annual ceremony celebrating black culture took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday evening (6/26/22), and this year Bruno Mars and Anderson’s R’n’B supergroup .Paak dominated the evening.

The duo’s debut album ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’ was crowned Album of the Year, while the hitmakers of ‘Leave The Door Open’ also won Best Group.

Anderson won a third award, Video Director of the Year, meaning he became the most awarded star of the night.

Doja Cat, Drake and Ari Lennox led the nominations, but all came away empty-handed.

Following the cancellation of Roe v Wade, resulting in illegal dismissals for millions of women across America, several stars used their stage time to blast the United States Supreme Court.

Actress and singer Janelle Monae, 36, raised her middle finger while introducing the nominees for top female R’n’B/pop artists, and received a standing ovation after delivering a powerful speech.

She said: “These artists make art on our own terms, own our truths, and speak freely and unapologetically in a world that tries to control and control our bodies, my body and our decisions, my body.

“F*** you Supreme Court. I know we’re celebrating each other right now like we should. We absolutely deserve to celebrate – especially now, we should be celebrating our art by protecting our rights and our truths.”

Jazmine Sullivan took home the award and asked men to ‘stand up’ for their wives because ‘we need your support now more than ever’.

She said: “It’s a difficult time for us.

“I want to speak directly to the men: we need you all. We need you all to stand up, stand up for us, stand up for us. If you’ve ever benefited from a woman making one of the hardest decisions of her life, which is to terminate a pregnancy, you need to be on your feet. This is not just a woman’s problem. It’s everyone’s problem. We need your support now more than ever.”

Elsewhere, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Mary J. Blige received the BET Her accolade.

The night saw epic performances from Lizzo, Jack Harlow, Lil Wayne, Roddy Ricch and Chance the Rapper.

Taraji. P Henson moderated the discussions.
