Zakes Bantwini leads the SA Music Awards with 7 nominations

Awards season is in full swing in South Africa as the South African Music Awards have released their nominations for this year’s 28th edition of SAMAs.

The organization took to Twitter on Tuesday evening, where it announced the different categories of awards to be presented to artists, as well as the artists nominated in each category.

The artist whose name has been seen repeatedly on the nominations lists is singer and record producer, Zakes Bantwini, who has picked up seven nominations for this year’s awards.

The musician released a dance album named king of the ghetto at the end of last year, which included popular tracks such as Osama, Uzalo and Abantu, which went viral nationwide and propelled him to the top positions of many music charts.

This album and the songs on it are the reason Zakes earned a spot in the SAMA nominations for Best Collaboration, Best Dance Album, Album of the Year, Best Engineering Album. of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Record of the Year.

Makhadzi for Best Collaboration, Blxckie and Emtee for Best Hip-Hop Album, Focalistic, Kamo Mphela and Young Stunna for Best Amapiano Album, and Pangea for Best Classical/Instrumental Album are other hitmakers who were nominated for this year.

According to the organization, this year’s South African Music Awards made history by receiving the highest number of entries since the awards were established in 1995.

“Some 1,395 applications were received as of the closing of the call for applications at midnight on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Last year, SAMAs received 1,163 applications, which represents an increase of more than 230 this year.

“This exponential growth bodes well for the future of the music industry and the role SAMA continues to play,” the organization said.
